Daniel J. Messina, Ph.D., FACHE, is President and Chief Executive Officer of Richmond University Medical Center, a role he assumed in April 2014. A life-long resident of Staten Island, Dr. Messina is a seasoned executive with over 30 years of healthcare leadership expertise.
During his tenure as President and CEO of Richmond University Medical Center, Dr. Messina has continued the expansion of the medical center’s primary and behavioral care networks along with the integration of those services. The medical center formed an Accountable Care Organization (ACO) and was instrumental in the development of the Staten Island Performing Provider System (SI PPS), New York State’s Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment (DSRIP) program.
Under Dr. Messina’s leadership, the medical center has launched a comprehensive Breast and Women’s Center, new programs in neurosurgical and neurovascular medicine, an Institute for Weight Loss and Metabolic Surgery, a state-of-the-art Center for Cancer Care, and the Center for Integrated Behavioral Medicine, whose programs are leading the borough’s fight against opioid abuse. The medical center has also opened three Primary Care/Immediate Care/ Walk-In Centers around Staten Island and reestablished a cardiopulmonary rehabilitation center on the grounds of the hospital. He also facilitated the merger with Staten Island Mental Health Society in early 2019 bringing their robust programs into the hospital’s network and cementing Richmond University Medical Center as Staten Island’s leading provider of behavioral health programs for children, adolescents and adults.
With an eye to the future, Dr. Messina worked side by side with the hospital’s committed board of trustees and management team in the design and development of the hospital’s new 35,000 sq. ft., two-story emergency department, a new cost saving, energy efficient co-generation power plant, and a school-based health clinic at Susan Wagner High School.
Prior to joining Richmond University, Dr. Messina served as the System Chief Operating Officer of CentraState Healthcare System in Freehold, New Jersey for 13 years where he was responsible for all system operations for the Medical Center, Monmouth Crossing Assisted Living Facility, The Manor Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and Applewood Estates Continuing Care Retirement Community. While in this role, Dr. Messina developed growth strategies that included a new Cancer Center, Proton Therapy Center, and programs in robotics, bariatric, and neurosurgery; as well as a new state-of-the-art critical care unit, emergency department, and an ambulatory campus. Inspired by his mother, Dr. Messina also developed the Linda E. Cardinale MS Center, one of the largest and most comprehensive multiple sclerosis centers in the region.
Dr. Messina received his BS in Health Science from Long Island University Brooklyn, his MPA in Healthcare Administration from LIU Post, and his Ph.D. in Health Sciences at Seton Hall University. He is a former regent for the American College of Health Care Executives and is Board Certified in Healthcare Management as an ACHE Fellow.
A former baseball standout at LIU, Dr. Messina enjoys hiking and spending time in the gym. He has climbed to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa and completed nine New York City marathons.
The most important part of Dr. Messina’s life is his family including late parents Rose and Sal; wonderful wife Debbie; son Daniel and his wife Ally; daughter Lianne and her husband Steve; and granddaughter Adeline Rose.
