Why a Medical School in Monmouth County?

There is extensive data to show how a new medical school in Monmouth County, NJ will have a dramatic impact on the community where it is developed as Universities largely impact a local community. This impact comes in many forms from student spending; relocation of faculty to the community and the newly created jobs which then establish the University.

The proposed medical school will be opened in Monmouth County, NJ, which has a population of 630,380 according to the latest census (2010). The primary ethnic makeup of the community is 84.4% white, 8.1% African American, 4% Asian with 6.2% being Hispanic. The median household income is $64,271 which is near the national average.

Annually, the proposed Monmouth College of Osteopathic Medicine would spend millions of dollars locally while training students for a career as physicians. During their training, Monmouth College of Osteopathic Medicine students would work in various city and county clinics, at many local hospitals and, as part of community service and outreach, in public school classrooms. Medical school graduates would be encouraged to practice medicine as an osteopathic physician in the Monmouth county area, as part of the mission and philosophy of the school – to train primary care physicians. The Medical School’s research facility would offer an opportunity to attract and grow additional knowledge-based industries to Monmouth County and potentially grow a biomedical corridor in the region.

As the number of students increase, so will the income generated by tuition. The amount of monies allocated to salaries would be projected at over $8M per annum equating to over 120 direct jobs within the community (based on community average wage of $65,000). The community will have a direct investment of over $40M, based on spending from the college, and an indirect impact of almost $100M (2.5x investment). The college would come to be a significant economic engine within the community creating over 250 jobs for the local economy.

Our research has shown that impact studies, similar to the one being put together for this school, show a large stimulation in local economy stem from the development of an area medical school. Monmouth College of Osteopathic Medicine will provide similar benefits to Monmouth County by creating jobs, bringing investment and maintain healthcare excellence within the community.
